Description:

Currier & Ives (American, 1834-1907), "Mr. Frank Work's Celebrated Team Edward and Swiveller." 1882. A separately issued hand-colored lithograph by “America’s printmakers” depicting a mustachioed gentleman dressed in a blue suit and white cap riding a horse-drawn carriage - holding the reigns and a whip. The image is action-packed, as all four legs of each horse are aloft in the winter air, their black manes flowing behind as they race. The text below the title reads, "To Road Wagon, Winning a Wager of $1,000 against Time 2:20, at the Gentleman's Driving Park; N.Y. July 13th, 1882. Trotting. Mile in 2:46 3/4 Without a Skip or Break." Set in a nice portfolio. Size: image measures 13.75" W x 7" H (34.9 cm x 17.8 cm)

From 1834 to 1907, the firm of Nathaniel Currier and (after 1856) Currier & Ives provided for the American people a wide and varied gallery of prints for the new mass market of middle class society. The firm was the most successful American popular printmaker, issuing over 8,000 different prints. Their success was the result of their good business sense and their accurate instincts of what the American public wanted. Their images have become classics, capturing the life and times of nineteenth century America.
