S.F." Wells Fargo’s enamel railroad signs were first used in the 1880s until their freight and shipping service came to an end during World War I (1914-1918). Founded in 1852 during the California Gold Rush, Wells Fargo started as a banking and express company, providing services such as freight, mail, and banking to pioneers and miners.   • Condition: Gouges and chips to the enamel sign front and verso. Patina and oxidation to the exposed metal sign surface. Mounted in a vintage / antique wooden frame, nails are rusted and bent. Wood is weathered with chips and splintering. Old cardboard backing has water damage and tears. The cardboard can easily be removed if one desired. There are 2 protruding screws on the front of the frame as well.
