Description:

Native American / First Nations, Northern United States / Canada, Great Lakes Region, Ojibwe, ca. 1880s CE. A bandolier bag sewn together from cotton cloth and velvet - the entire front face of the strap and pocket are beaded with thousands of glass seed beads, and yarn tassel are suspended from the bottom edge. The ground is lane-stitched with semi translucent beads and the curving petals and scrolling stems were added using applique or spot stitching techniques. This bag is known as an "aazhooningwa'on" meaning "worn across the shoulder" in the Ojibwe language and was inspired by bags carried by European soldiers armed with rifles to store ammunition cartridges. The beadwork was done by women while men generally wore the finished piece across one shoulder and resting at their hip as symbols of wealth and status, like a decorative sash. Size: 45" L x 15" W (114.3 cm x 38.1 cm)
