Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, dated to 1877 CE. A lovely example of a tripartite, folding, travel icon, comprised of silver with beautiful enamelwork in cobalt blue, aqua, spring green, and golden yellow hues. The central panel depicts the Virgin Mary and Christ Child in an arch format with a leafy border. Flanking this are two panels that depict an archangel (left) and a patron saint (right). There is a hallmark with the date 1877 and another with initials (MN); these are also surrounded by leafy borders. In order to support traveling priests on missions, precious religious objects like this example were made small enough to be carried on long journeys. Size: 2.75" W x 1.75" H (7 cm x 4.4 cm) when opened; 1.7" W x 1.75" H (4.3 cm x 4.4 cm) when closed; weight: 60.8 grams; silver quality: 92%.
