Description:

North American, United States, Arkansas, ca. 1868 CE. A fascinating hand-written court martial document concerning the fate of an infantry private named Timothy Sullivan. The alleged charge is described as "CONDUCT TO THE PREJUDICE OF GOOD ORDER AND MILITARY DISCIPLINE." The crimes included disorderly conduct at the stables at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and being unable to attend drills due to drunkenness. The document is embossed in the upper corner with the official government mark, dated November 30th 1868, and signed by the commanding general. These offenses could carry serious consequences if found guilty. Manual labor and embarrassing or painful punishments could be carried out for drunkenness, including wearing a wooden barrel and marching for hours in public.
