Description:

North America, United States, Chicopee, Massachusetts, ca. 1863 CE. A fabulous Civil War era carbon steel cavalry sword with a brass guard and steel scabbard. The blade is slightly curved and fits into the scabbard that has two rings for attaching. The hilt is covered with a leather grip and a twisted brass wire. Upon one side of the ricasso is the makers' mark: "AMES MFG CHICOPPEE MASS." and on the other side is "US ADK 1863." The pommel is brass and has "ADK" stamped upon this area as well; the initials and mark for the inspector Andrew D. King who inspected the sword in 1863. A leather washer seals the guard of the blade. This type of sword was first created in 1860 for light cavalry and was used by the Union army during the American Civil War. Size (sword): 41" L (104.1 cm); (in sheath): 43.375" L (110.2 cm)

  • Condition: Cracking and chipping to leather handle. Twisted brass wire is slightly loose. Blade sticks in the sheath. Nicks and scratches to blade, sheath, and guard as expected with use. Blade is slightly sharp. Maker marks are clearly stamped. Nice patina on sheath.
