After Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1607-1669). Salt print of four Rembrandt etchings in a book titled "L'Oeuvre de Rembrandt" by Bisson & Freres (French, active 1840-1864) and Charles Blanc (French, 1813-1882); printed by Rose-Joseph Lemercier (French, 1813-1887) in 1853. "L'Oeuvre de Rembrandt" (1853) was a significant book in the history of photography as this was the first time that a book was illustrated with photographs reproduced from albumen-on-glass negatives. Bisson & Freres were the photographers; Rose-Joseph Lemercier printed the photographs, and Charles Blanc, former French minister of Fine Arts, wrote the commentary.
