Description:

North America, United States, Eastern Plains, ca. 1840s CE. A gorgeous example of an American percussion rifle covered in lustrous patina. The octagonal steel barrel bears a substantial weight and features interior rifling grooves, a pair of vent holes, a ram rod beneath the front half, a brass sight above the muzzle, and the base for the original sight above the forestock. Beneath the forestock is an ovoid brass skid plate meant for protecting the wooden stock should the rifle be placed on a rough, stationary surface when carefully aiming. The percussion firing mechanism is operated via a set trigger and a firing trigger contained within a brass trigger guard, and a custom wheel sight is screwed into a housing just behind the hammer. The top of the barrel is stamped with a maker mark reading, "DG BAKER." The back stock once bore an ovoid placard, perhaps with the name of the rifle's owner. Size (rifle): 49" L x 2.25" W (124.5 cm x 5.7 cm); (barrel): 34.25" L x 1.25" W (87 cm x 3.2 cm); (bore): 0.53" W (1.3 cm)
