Description:

**Originally Listed At $600**

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A wonderful copper repousse torana or throne-back fragment embellished with auspicious symbols of Buddhism and liberal remains of gilding. This fragment would sit at the top of the torana as it comes to a point at the top and displays a central opening for the head of the deity which it frames. A pair of nagas sit at the base of the fragment as the spiraling bodies of 2 mythological creatures resembling birds extend from their heads. Five teardrop-shaped symbols, perhaps mandalas, decorate the top of the arch, likely intended to represent the 5 Buddhas, while a sun and moon symbol are featured just above them. A pair of wing-like ornaments flank the central opening, meant to crown the head of the deity, as the exterior periphery is lined with a tongued motif. Size: 10.3" W x 11.3" H (26.2 cm x 28.7 cm)
