Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A remarkable iron and silver-inlaid casket shaped box with a hinged lid and latch. The surface decorated with scrolling vine and peonies, phoenix birds on the front near the latch and a four headed dorje on the lid. The dorje, also known as a vajra - a familiar symbol of Tibetan Buddhism which represents the moment of Enlightenment. The dorje / vajra is typically depicted as a small, double-headed or four-headed diamond-shaped object that represents lightning. The precise function of the box is unknown, but it may have been used to store esoteric objects used in tantric rituals! Size: 10" L x 4.75" W x 8" H (25.4 cm x 12.1 cm x 20.3 cm)

  • Condition: Patina and oxidation to iron- light red and black areas. Some fading to silver. Mineral deposits on interior corners of feet. Interior is lined with velvet which is not original to the piece. Good antique condition!
