Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A hand carved sandstone relief originally from the Phitsanulok region of Thailand, depicting the portal guardian Yaksa (also spelled Yaksha, Yaksi or Yaksini) holding a sword, wearing a cloth waist wrap, and further adorned with wrist, arm, and neck bands. The detailing on the back side may represent a tree root, for in Hindu mythology, Yakshas are nature spirits who protect the treasures hidden amid the roots of trees and within the earth. They are magical shape shifters who are at times mischievous and avidly sexual. In visual art, Yakshas are some of the earliest deities depicted, even preceding imagery of bodhisattvas! Black, wood block stand. Size: 13" x 6-1/2" x 5-3/4" (33 x 16.5 x 14.6 cm); 17" (43.2 cm) on stand
