Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. An elegant statue fragment cast from bronze in the form of a dancing apsara figure with beautiful gilt covering the surface. The dancer is posed dramatically, mid-sway with arms presenting a graceful motion with legs bent to right sides of her curvaceous body. She holds an arm in front of her bosom in an open palm gesture and is richly adorned with arm bands, necklace, and a flowing, pleated garment around her waist. An apsara is a female spirit of the waters and the clouds in both Buddhist and Hindu mythology. They are usually depicted as beautiful celestial maidens, sometimes with wings; the two projections at her waist probably represent these wings. A beautiful piece with wonderful symbolism and dynamic energy! Size: 3.5" W x 3.25" H (8.9 cm x 8.3 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand; quality of gold gilt: 34% to 72%
