Description:

Europe, Spain, ca. 17th to 18th century. A Spanish saddle finely crafted from wood, metal, leather, and hide ties - known as an estriadiota and popular with the Spanish as well as those of the French Basque region. This was a popular type of war saddle of mainland Europe that originated in the 8th century and was used until it was replaced with the horned saddled of the early 19th century for those two cultures. This example is comprised of wooden sections and embellished with beautiful embossed metalwork and leather inlays. The sections are secured with hide and metal fittings. Given its construction and embellishment, we believe it to be of the Baroque era and most likely used by a Spanish knight or aristocrat. A very special artifact indeed! Size: 18" L x 13.75" W x 11" H (45.7 cm x 34.9 cm x 27.9 cm)
