Description:

Western Europe, Spain, ca. 17th to early 18th century CE. A forged-steel helmet known as a morion with a tall, domed form surrounded by a round-edged brim. The front and back points of the brim are slightly raised in a style traditional of morion helmets, and a tall crest courses over the top of the dome. Petite rivets surround the brim with those on the points securing one half of the helmet to the other, and trios of lateral rivets indicate where the original ear flaps would have hung. The purpose of the central crest was to protect the wearer from strikes coming from directly above like a sword or axe slash and created a buffer between the weapon and the dome portion of the helmet. Two faint hallmarks are present on opposite sides of the brim. Size: 10" W x 8.5" H (25.4 cm x 21.6 cm)
