Description:

Western Europe, Spain, ca. 17th century CE. A beautiful matched set of latch, handles, and key, probably from a chest or trunk. They share an openwork floral motif, with scalloped edges, to create an ornate texture on each. Two of the iron loops of the handles are largely smooth but slightly indented and decorated with abstract bands at their centers. The other two are smaller, perhaps for the lid (while the larger are for the sides), each with incised motifs. The latch itself is square, with a large, projecting rectangle rising from it on one side. This is a sliding mechanism. The keyhole is on the lower corner of the rectangle. Four arms, each with a similar openwork round finial as the handles, rise from the sides of the latch. The key has a round, openwork handle and a beautifully symmetrical mechanism. Size of largest piece: 8.75" W x 8.6" H (22.2 cm x 21.8 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990
