Description:

Western Europe, Spain, ca. late 16th to early 17th century CE. A large cast-bronze mortar and accompanying pestle in a lovely golden color. The mortar has a globular form, consistent with the Gothic styles of this time period, with a short foot, a collared rim, a layer of dark-brown patina, and twelve equidistant vertical ribs around the body. The pestle is shaped with a lengthy handle and a wide pounding end, with spool-shaped protrusions near the top of the handle as well as the mid-point. A lovely and well-used pair of Spanish bronze tools! Size (mortar): 3.375" H (8.6 cm); size (pestle): 8.25" L (21 cm).

Provenance: private Omer Claiborne collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, acquired over the last 40 years
