Description:

Europe, Spain, ca. 17th century CE. A dramatic Spanish Baroque carved wood relief panel depicting Saint John of the Cross, an important figure of the Counter Reformation and one of the most revered poets of the Spanish language. This most impressive piece was displayed in the Denver Art Museum in the 1960's. It was adeptly carved and painted; vivid red, black, and ochre pigment remain. Saint John of the Cross was depicted by some of the most famous Spanish Baroque artists. For instance, this beautiful work is contemporary with Zurbaran's masterful painting of Saint John of the Cross (1656). The artist of this piece similarly captured the passion of this Spanish mystic and reformer of the Carmelite Order who is regarded as a founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with Saint Teresa of Avila. Just look at that heroic pose as Saint John wields the large cross from a kneeling position, dressed in a flowing robe, the folds of it so elegantly cascading over his form. Interestingly, Saint John himself created a drawing of the crucifixion, his famous drawing of Christ "from above," created between 1574 and 1577 after he was inspired by a vision while praying in the Monastery of the Incarnation in Avila. Centuries later, Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali would be inspired to paint his "Christ of Saint John of the Cross" (1951) after seeing Saint John's drawing which had been preserved in Avila. Here we have a fine relief carving that boasts skillful technique and artistry and is replete with the rich iconography that inspired so many artists from different eras! Size: 14.75" W x 18.5" H (37.5 cm x 47 cm)
