Description:

Russia, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A bronze portable icon featuring a central panel depicting a tender image of the Virgin and Child. Surrounding this is a border containing eighteen roundels circumscribing renderings of various saints or holy figures. Small metal icons like this example have existed for thousands of years and were oftentimes called traveler's icons used by soldiers who could actually carry them into battle or other devoted persons who carried them for protection. A lovely example that has developed a gorgeous green patina. Size: 5.5" L x 4.625" W (14 cm x 11.7 cm)
