Description:

Pieter Boel (also Peeter Boel) (Flemish, 1626-1674), hand colored etching, ca. mid 17th century CE. A beautiful etching with hand coloring from the Baroque period depicting a genre scene of a horseman with two horses. Boel specialized in still lifes and animal paintings. He was quite a pioneer of the latter in that he worked with live animal models in their natural environs as opposed to the stuffed specimens that his contemporaries used. As a result, his works were praised for their natural poses and realism - quite refreshing compared to the relatively static animal studies of his day. Though Flemish by birth, Boel moved to Paris where he became painter to the king and had many admirers. Size: 5.25" W x 4.125" H (13.3 cm x 10.5 cm); 12" W x 9.875" H (30.5 cm x 25.1 cm) including mat
