Western Asia, Persia, Iran, Safavid Dynasty, ca. 17th to early 18th century CE. A gorgeous zinc alloy bowl with interlocking bulb decorations on the exterior and lengthy lines of text surrounding a central inscription within the basin, all covered in a layer of 25% silver. The bowl features a squat, flared foot beneath a hemispherical body and a flared rim on top. Three rings of Kufic text course around the basin interior and enclose a circular panel with additional text, perhaps containing a name or a prayer. Great patina envelops the entire vessel. Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany
