Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, 17th to 18th century CE. An ornately carved, dark wood spinning wheel, its surface decorated with inlaid shells in intricate diamond-shaped forms. The faces of mythical creatures and the bodies of gods decorate the sides, as do seated lion figures at each corner, ornate window-like motifs on the side opposite the wheel, and vines and cross-hatching, all carved in relief aside from the lions, who project outward in high relief. The spinning wheel originated in India sometime around 1000 CE, replacing the method of hand-spinning with a spindle. On this early example, the fiber is held in the left hand and the wheel slowly turned with the right, and spun around the metal pin included with this piece. Size: 9.5" L x 19" W x 14.7" H (24.1 cm x 48.3 cm x 37.3 cm)
