East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A lovely box composed of several wooden slats that are secured via several iron pins. The rectangular box has a form-fitting lid on top, and the interior surfaces of both the lid and body are lined with thin sheets of metal. Boxes like this example were used as storage containers for various types of incense, and the interior of this box still retains some latent scents of the material once contained within. Size: 7" L x 10.8" W x 7.1" H (17.8 cm x 27.4 cm x 18 cm)
