Description:

Western/Southern Europe, Italy, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A forged-steel trident spear known as a spetum with a pair of curved, upturned blade points flanking an enormous central point. The central point is reinforced with a prominent midrib as well as a faceted socketing shaft that is pinned to the top of the wooden haft. Both sides of the blade feature faint pointillist motifs of curvilinear bands and perhaps abstract zoomorphic creatures and have thin lines outlining the profiles of each blade face.   • Condition: Repair to upper section of wooden haft with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Original butt cap is missing as shown. Blade head is loose atop wooden haft. Softening to pointillist motifs on blade faces, with slight bending to overall profiles of blades, and minor abrasions to blade, socketing shaft, and haft. Nice patina to haft and blades.
