Description:

Western Europe, Italy, Baroque Period, ca. 17th century CE. A fascinating fragment of a marble sculpture, perhaps for a niche, displaying the left foot of a figure, possibly Hercules, beside the head and front paws of a lion, all atop a footed pedestal. Mouth open and tongue drooping out, the lion appears vanquished, even dead, his thick mane cascading in wavy tresses around his closed eyes and round snout as his legs lay at is sides. The beast's slender body slopes upwards, seemingly lifted by the tail by the standing figure, and the base of a quadrilateral column is displayed behind them. All this action happens atop a corseted pedestal supported by 2 short legs, each sculpted to appear as abstract clusters of bulbs. Size: 8" L x 14" W x 11.8" H (20.3 cm x 35.6 cm x 30 cm)
