Description:

Middle East, Levantine Coast, Late Islamic, ca. 17th to 18th centuries CE. A beautiful and petite hand-blown amber glass vessel with undulating walls and a dimpled bottom with broken pontil. The entire surface is adorned with feather patterning as well as two narrow registers of cross-hatched designs, all hand-painted in white and beige against the amber background. These design motifs point to Byzantine and even core-form Hellenistic influences. Size: 2-3/8"H x 2" in diameter at widest point (6 cm x 5 cm).

The Islamic period was one of innovation in glassmaking, with the development of advanced glass cutting, moulding, decorating, gilding, painting and dyeing processes that went on to define technological and stylistic parameters in the Renaissance following the Crusades, and indeed many subsequent glassmaking traditions.
