*South Asia, India, Odisha, 17th to 19th century. A marvelous Patta Chitra (also Patachitra or Puri Patta) painting rendered in the Orissan style. The intricate composition is a view of the 12th century Jagannatha Temple in Puri and presents the triad of Jagannatha (Lord of the World in Hindu mythology), Blabadra (Balarama), and Subhadra housed beneath the Orissan tower. This central image is surrounded by a myriad of secondary shrines and iconography derived from the temple grounds. All is delineated with intricate details and vibrant colors. Such paintings have traditionally have been painted on cloth or pata as souvenirs for pilgrims. A beautiful painting mounted behind glass in an attractive custom frame. See a 17th century painting of similar Jagannatha temple iconography at the Victoria and Albert Museum (accession number IS.64-1985). According to the Victoria and Albert Museum, "Jagannatha, 'Lord of the Universe', is a form of Krishna around whom a highly popular cult emerged in Puri, attracting devotees from distant parts of India and establishing the city as a major pilgrim centre. The cult spread to Bengal and Assam and, judging from the evidence of this painting, to Nepal. Workshops producing devotional paintings for pilgrims prospered around the temple in Puri."   • Condition: Painting is mounted behind glass in an attractive custom frame and has not been examined outside the frame. Through the glass one can see evidence of age with crease marks and areas of loss here and there. The frame is excellent and fit with a suspension wire.
