Northern/Central Europe, Germany, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A fine pitcher built from blue-glazed white pottery known as westerwald stoneware with a flared foot and a bulbous body. Surrounding the body are three ovoid panels displaying the Amsterdam coat of arms which consists of two lions facing one another, a royal crown, and a vertical banner containing three X's representing three St. Andrew's Crosses. Above each coat of arms is a globus cruciger (Latin for "cross-bearing orb") indicative of the Christian church. The tapered neck is decorated with a trio of blue rings that cease just prior to the thick rim, and a strap handle is attached along one side. Size: 4.5" W x 7.875" H (11.4 cm x 20 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with restoration to roughly 10% of body and neck, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Touch-up painting to some areas of blue pigment, and a few stable hairline fissures resulting from damage. Great preservation to coat of arms and areas of original blue pigment.
