Description:

Western Europe, Germany, ca. 17th century CE. A fabulous set of five stoneware pottery jars which were fired at a relatively-high temperature. Each cylindrical vessel boasts a flat base, tall walls, a rounded shoulder, and a narrow mouth which fits a metal lid. The lids of the two smaller vessels are easily removable and lined with cork rings on the underside, and those of the three larger vessels are attached to the rim and have threaded metal caps. The vessels are covered in applied pottery appliques depicting humans and foliate motifs, and salt-based glaze imbues them with a dark-orange hue. Size of largest: 3.875" W x 8.9" H (9.8 cm x 22.6 cm).
