Germany, 17th century CE. This is an ivory plaque carved in high relief depicting Prometheus being punished for stealing fire from the gods by having his liver eternally eaten by an eagle. This plaque comes from the European Age of Exploration, when new trade routes opened up European markets and cultural lives to materials and styles from around the world. Ivory carving, which had been practiced in Europe throughout the medieval period, became intensely popular during the Baroque period; new trade routes from the east and west coasts of Africa brought ivory from elephant tusks into Europe where, particularly in Holland and Central Europe, elites had a sudden strong desire for intricately carved ivory pieces. Patrons funded ivory carvers and workshops for these artisans were set up in places like Amsterdam, Heidelberg, and Mainz. This time period was when people wishing to display their wealth and learning sought items that highlighted exotic influences and goods in rooms called Kunstkammer or Wunderkammer (similar to the English idea of a Cabinet of Curiosities). The violence of the ivory trade and the grotesque methods of acquiring ivory tusks were not yet concerns at this time. Size: 4.5" L x 2.25" W (11.4 cm x 5.7 cm).
