Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Europe, Germany, Upper Rhine, ca. 17th century CE. A handsomely carved oak figure of a boy, he stands in motion, with his head tilted and one arm raised. He wears a gown carved with realistic folds. His youthful face is skillfully rendered, with chubby cheeks and a sweet, open-eyed expression - the missing hand was likely once attached to that of an adult who he was gazing up towards, mostly likely in a religious scene. His hair is curled and tousled, further emphasizing his innocent nature. Although the figure was likely once painted, the now-exposed natural grain of the oak gives it a beautiful appearance. Size: 8" W x 27.25" H (20.3 cm x 69.2 cm)

#151280

  • Condition: The sculpture is carved separately from the base and the connection between them is somewhat loose. Both base and sculpture are weathered, with some fissures and light deposits. Old inactive insect damage in a few areas, notably the lower part of the gown. Hands and one foot are lost. Still the sculpture has a remarkable presence and displays impressive artistry.
