Northern Europe, probably Germany, ca. late 17th to early 18th century CE. A northern European, most likely German, carved and painted boxwood depiction of the crucifixion, finely rendered with realistic musculature and long majestic proportions. Christ's tranquil visage appears to be serenely releasing the anguish of the crucifixion, despite the blood flowing from his wounds. The cross of a lovely design with intricately carved termini, fitted within a polychromed base. Masterfully carved in sought after European boxwood. A superb example of high European religious sculpture. Size: 9.5" W x 17" H (24.1 cm x 43.2 cm).
