Description:

Western Europe, France, ca. 17th to early 18th century CE. A hand-carved wooden statue of Mary Magdalene dressed in cascading robes adorned in crimson pigment and layers of gilding. Mary stands atop a hemisphere representing the world while planting her right foot atop the neck of a lengthy serpent representing Satan. She holds both arms out in an open and protective gesture as she stares outwards with almond-shaped eyes, and a trio of petite iron pins suggest the presence of additional ornamentation or adornments at one time.
