Description:

Europe, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A carved wood, bone, and ivory hinged triptych depicting the crucifixion in the center with a swooning Mary supported by Mary Magdelene to Christ's right and Saint John supported by another, perhaps the "Beloved Disciple," to Christ's left. Depicted in the side wings are either the donors, a female to the left and a male to the right, or the Virgin Mary and Saint John once again. An angel holding a cross inscribed shield hovers in the pendentive above the crucifixion scene. Surrounding each panel of the triptych is a border carved from bone inscribed with a lovely foliated pattern. The figures and architectural elements within are carved from ivory. The panels are further embellished with a deep blue pigment behind the iconography that provides a pleasing contrast with the lustrous, cream-hued ivory. Size: 8.5" W x 9.5" H (21.6 cm x 24.1 cm)
