Description:

Europe, ca. 17th century CE. A solid-cast silver ear cleaner of a figural form, with one side depicting the winged Archangel Gabriel blowing his trumpet/horn, the verso depicting another winged figure, probably Abigail, donning a loincloth. Integral suspension loop at upper end. A stunning and very unique example of visual culture, replete with the utmost technique, artistry, as well as intriguing iconography. Size: 3.25" L (8.3 cm)

The female with wings depicted on the verso is most likely Abigail as an Angel "The Father's Choice" - quite unusual as angels in the Bible are typically male. Reference: "Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, two women coming forward! The wind was in their wings. They had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven." (Zechariah 5:9)
