Description:

Europe, most likely Italy or France, painting of Pieta / Lamentation on copper, ca. 17th century CE. Finely painted on an oval piece of heavy gauge copper sheet, a dramatic depiction of the Pieta following the descent from the Cross in which the body of Christ is held by the Virgin Mary. In this composition, we also see Joseph kneeling before his son in mourning; there are angels above surrounding the Cross, and souls in the flames of purgatory below. A very special piece, not only for its meaningful iconography, but also for the dramatic Baroque style and strong technique of the artist demonstrating impressive foreshortening, atmospheric perspective, fine brushwork, and convincing modeling of the figures. Size: 6.125" L x 4.75" W (15.6 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent; ex-private Los Angeles County collection, California, USA , acquired between 1950 to 1990
