Description:

East Asia, China, late Ming to early Qing Dynasty, ca. 1600 to 1700 CE. A wonderful ceramic plate decorated in fine blue-on-white glaze with a squat footed base, wide body, and a shallow dish cavity. The exterior is painted with azure swaths reminiscent of sea plants, with the central design depicting a naturalistic fish with broad fins, crosshatched body, and an open mouth. Petite spots surround the finned animal, giving the impression of air bubbles floating to the water's surface, with concentric circles and large stippled designs around the upper rim. The bottom of the plate also displays a quartet of triplicate sapphire-hued streaks, and the underside of the foot is unadorned. Size: 7" W x 1.5" H (17.8 cm x 3.8 cm)
