East Asia, China, late Ming to early Qing Dynasty, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A fine example of Cizhou style stoneware of Shoulao with both human and animal companions on a pedestal. Shoulao is the ancient embodiment / deity figure of long life and luck - portrayed with an enormous head to symbolize wisdom, a long beard from age, and a calligraphy scroll in one hand. An attendant with a staff stands to his side and surrounding is a deer, a turtle, and a crane as symbols of immortality and longevity. Statues of Shoulao were produced during the Ming and Qing Dynasty, oftentimes in molds or carved from wood and stone – this piece is wonderfully detailed and glazed with iron brown, black, cream, and peach tones!
