Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Central Europe, ca. 17th century CE. A short cast iron tool for eel fishing, of a trident-shape that conjures imagery of Poseidon (though of course the 17th century preceded the Neoclassical period by about a 100 years), with three barbed points and a long tang that was probably once attached to a long pole likely made of wood. Size: 10.1" L x 2.5" W (25.7 cm x 6.4 cm)

Eel fishing is a somewhat forgotten practice that was incredibly important not that long ago - a dependable way to find food, even in the cold and stormy months of winter when fishing offshore or in larger bodies of water became treacherous. Eels could be caught close to home in bays, estuaries, and creeks with saltwater. A device like this would have been used by someone standing in the water, probably with the aid of a net, basket, or other form of eel trap.
