Description:

Central Europe, Germany, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A handsome, well preserved example of a carbon steel rapier with a "flame-bladed" edge, also known as a flamberge rapier. A half-sphere pommel is above a simple wrapped leather handle, giving it the appearance of having been a weapon for use in duels rather than mere decoration. A complex hilt, made of two curved steel bands with a spherical bauble at each terminal, sits at the guard. The blade itself has regularly undulating edges, a style designed to cause unpleasant vibrations in an opponent's blade when parried. This example was sharpened on its sides and tip - not always the case with rapiers. The shorter length indicates that it belongs to a transitional period in sword styles, when lighter swords became popular. Size: 3.65" W x 25" H (9.3 cm x 63.5 cm); 25.5" H (64.8 cm) on included custom stand.
