Africa, Niger or Mauritania, ca. 1890 to 1925. Lot of 17 mostly large circular trade beads made from plant resin - as opposed to true amber. Beads like this were traded throughout Africa and worn as a status symbol. Each has developed a wonderful deep patina from wear and each is authentic, tribaly worn and used - not made and sold for the tourist trade. Size for smallest: .75" W (19mm). For largest Size: 1.75" W x 1.125" H (4.4 cm x 2.9 cm)
