Europe, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. An antique, extensively decorated wooden and iron bound chest, the lid presenting a gabled top with canted sides and a central latched section that opens nicely, set on four turned feet, with iron strapwork and latch. Almost every square inch of the exterior (except the underside) is meticulously incised with abstract decorative motifs including the large deeply carved pinwheel motif on the lid and passages of fret marks, concentric circles, s-shaped motifs, and more - all arranged in an attractive symmetrical composition.   • Condition: A few old chips/losses to the legs with possible repairs. Old repair to one side of gable with losses in the vicinity. Old nicks and age cracks visible on surface. Wood has developed a nice patina.
