Near East, Turkey, Iznik, Ottoman culture, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A beautiful fritware tile in a vintage wood frame as a ready to display piece, painted in turquoise and cobalt hues on a white ground- tulips and saz style foliate motifs- and covered in clear protective glaze. Colorful tiles were made outside of Istanbul in Iznik during the Ottoman rule, often commissioned by rulers to adorn the walls of their courts, palaces, mosques, and other important buildings. Size of tile: 9.5" L x 9.5" W (24.1 cm x 24.1 cm); frame: 10.6" L x 10.6" W (26.9 cm x 26.9 cm)
