Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 16th century CE. An elegant statue of Buddha, carefully cast in bronze and beautifully gilded. This particular Buddha wears a beautiful sanghati (outer robe) and presents classic attributes of the Thai interpretation of Buddha such as those tightly delineated curls of hair and the pointed flame ushnisha. Buddha sits with legs crossed, a serene look on his face, his hands forming the Bhumisparsa Mudra (meaning "earth witness") one of the most iconic poses of Buddhism. His left palm is upright in his lap, and his right hand reaches down past his robes to touch the earth. This mudra comes from the story of Buddha asking Prthivi, the spirit of the earth, to witness his enlightenment when he was threatened by the king demon, Mara. A stunning piece with gorgeous green and russet patina and nice remains of gilding. Size: 2.375" H (6 cm); 3.125" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.
