Thailand, ca. 16th century CE. This is a bronze with gold leaf and black lacquer Buddha seated in the half lotus posture. He has a flame shaped ushnisha, tight, curly hair, elongated ears, and a plain meditation sash. He sits atop a basic throne. His hands are in the Samadhi mudra, which promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation, and unity with a higher energy; they are placed, both palms upward, in his lap. Overall, this Buddha projects an air of simple peace and meditation. The style of art is Chiang Sean / Lanna. Lanna or Lan Na was a state with roots in Indian culture centered on modern day northern Thailand from the 13th to the 18th centuries; Chiang Sean was its major port city. Size: 17-1/2" H x 11" W x 6-1/4 L (44-1/2 cm x 28 cm x 16 cm).
