Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. This is a beautiful leaded-bronze cast head fragment from a statue of the Buddha. He is characteristically depicted to reflect his tranquility with eyes cast downwards under slightly arched brows, broad nose, and full lips. His ears are elongated from wearing heavy earrings - symbolic of his casting away material wealth and his ability to hear the cries of suffering. His coiffure consists of textured nodules as tight coils of curls clustered across his head, which encircle a flaming ushnisha in the center. A beautiful rendition of a youthful Buddha with great sensitivity to details and a wonderful weathered and aged presence! Size: 3.5" L x 1.65" W (8.9 cm x 4.2 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
