Description:

**Originally Listed At $1200**

Europe, Spain, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A large illuminated page from the Liturgy of the Hours, known as the Evening Office of the Church, or the vespers. Hand written on vellum, with black ink and a red capital, this page is from the Common of Many Martyrs (also known as the Common of Several Martyrs, or the Hymn for Many Martyrs). Meant to be read around sundown, meaningful to the faithful of the Catholic Church, this page would have had particular meaning for the Spanish who in the (very) late 15th century and early 16th century used the justification of faith to violently overtake the New World. Size of exposed page: 14.4" W x 20.15" H (36.6 cm x 51.2 cm); size of frame: 30" W x 36.25" H (76.2 cm x 92.1 cm)
