Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Mixtec culture, Post-Conquest period, ca. mid-16th century CE. A remarkable collection of 4 silver bells, each in the form of a zoomorphic head resembling a canine with sizeable, pointed ears. All 4 bells display extending, tapered snouts, annular, openwork nostrils, bulging, target-motif eyes, and lengthy mouths held open. Spherical bells protrude from the end of each snout, while suspension loops on their versos indicate they were intended to be worn perhaps on the human body or attached to another material. Size of largest: 0.8" W x 2.2" H (2 cm x 5.6 cm)
