Description:

Malaysian or Philippines, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. Wonderful bronze cannon of the type used on merchant ships travelling the waters of the Malay Archipelago. Guns of this type were used to protect the ship and its cargo from pirates known to frequent this region seeking tribute for the local chieftain. This fine example has a deep brown patina with flared muzzle, raised site post, decorative element near the touch hole, and long swiveling tang. Carriage consists of two iron wheels , raised wooden supports, and short wooden trail. Cannon itself measures 33.5" L (85.1 cm). Carriage Size: 38" L x 25" W x 20" H (96.5 cm x 63.5 cm x 50.8 cm).
