Description:

Europe, likely Italy, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A fine rondel dagger made from iron with the signature disc-shaped guard and pommel. The blade is long and slim with a double edge that tapers to a needle-like tip. A circular guard protects the handle, and the tang is capped with a circular pommel, hence the term "rondel". A brass floral-shaped rivet decorates the center of the pommel. The bare tang would have been covered at one time with wood or some other material to facilitate gripping this deadly weapon. This type of dagger is suited for stabbing and puncturing, rather than slashing. In fact, rondels were developed to pierce through the joints in armor or through helmet visors, and knights used rondels as sidearms in warfare or jousts. Size: 14.5" L x 2.5" W (36.8 cm x 6.4 cm)
