Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. 16th century CE. A cast-bronze statuette depicting Krishna in a dancing pose. The deity stands with one foot curled atop a small cylinder, wears a lengthy belt across his thighs and a pectoral atop his chest, and holds a petite, vial-shaped ball of butter in his outstretched left hand. His minimalist countenance is defined by incised ovoid eyes, a narrow nose above thin lips, full cheeks, tall ears with elongated lobes, and a bald brow topped by a spindle-shaped finial. Lustrous green and brown patina envelop the entire composition and give this depiction of the "dancing butter thief" (navanita-nritta-murti) a stylish presentation. Size: 2.875" W x 4.1" H (7.3 cm x 10.4 cm); 6.8" H (17.3 cm) on included custom stand.
